The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
