The Fallout of Nigeria's Spectacular $25 M Museum and the Historic Artworks
The nation's remarkable new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) has ended up in the center of regional political struggles during the period it was expected to β but was unable β to welcome visitors to the general public for the first time.
The Grand Vision
The 15-acre complex is located in the core of Benin's urban center, administrative center of the southern area of Edo β and includes an historical dig and facilities planned by renowned dual heritage architect Sir David Adjaye, most famous for the Washington African American Museum that began operations in the US capital in 2016.
It has been 60 months in the making β and is planned to celebrate both the heritage and the present of creativity in the area known for the cultural artifacts, historical pieces stolen from the king's palace by UK forces in the 1800s.
Setup and Prospects
It is impressive β and prior to the planned opening, Mowaa was buzzing with workers determined to show it is a venue that can match renowned cultural centers in the Western world.
Within art restorers carefully revealed cultural items from safety materials, inspecting each artifact and taking detailed documentation before arranging them on display surfaces and plinths.
Specialists fine-tuned climate control systems. In the scientific facility, staff members adjusted instruments intended to maintain historical items.
Investment and Economic Plans
The venture has been the concept of entrepreneur Phillip Ihenacho β now Mowaa's chief executive.
"I hope us to have a major economic benefit on area populations in this region," he told journalists, adding that he wanted to make Benin City "a tourism center."
Mowaa, a non-profit national foundation, aims at generating over 30,000 employment opportunities and adding over $80m per year to the local cultural industry through alliances and programming.
Funding Sources and Political Challenges
It has needed $25m to achieve this stage β capital raised from different supporters, including the European governments, the London institution and the Edo state government.
But now the regional administration has revoked permission from under it β revoking the occupancy of the property on which the facility was constructed.
An Edo state spokesperson explained this was because in the initial documents it had called itself Edo Museum of West African Art β and it had later eliminated "the state identifier" from its designation.
Demonstrations and Government Action
This announcement was preceded by protests on the weekend, when people invaded the facility calling for it be named the Royal Benin Museum.
A disruptive assembly confronted overseas dignitaries at the facility before the inauguration β forcing them to be quickly removed under security protection.
President Bola Tinubu has additionally intervened to work to address the tensions, creating a high-level committee to do some damage control.
Governance Issues
But how has this turned into so controversial β and such a PR disaster?
A great deal of it results from internecine rivalries at a regional government level, as it was the former state leader Godwin Obaseki β whose governance concluded the previous year β who was a major backer of the project.
And it looks like the government of the recently elected official, a strong supporter of the area king, known as the royal figure, may seek more of a stake in the project. The activists on the weekend, for instance, were demanding that the museum be positioned under the authority of the current Oba.
The Benin Bronzes Controversy
This brings into focus the disputed topic of the cultural artifacts, one of the region's most renowned artistic heritage.
Because although the museum does eventually welcome visitors, these bronzes will be clearly not present.
They are brass, ivory and wooden sculptures that once decorated the king's residence of the Benin Kingdom before UK forces took them in 1897 during a punitive expedition.
Today, thousands stay distributed across museums in the West -- such as the UK institution, Berlin's Humboldt Forum and the New York institution.
Restitution Efforts
Their repatriation has become one of the most debated discussions in the international art community. About 150 have now been returned β and additional are expected to return.
When plans for the institution in the city were originally proposed in 2019, the key players on Nigeria's art scene hoped it would become their perfect venue β a advanced campus to exhibit them to the global audience.
But the waters were muddied some time back after the central administration announced that the Oba would be the proper guardian of repatriated artifacts β and the royal household campaigned for a institution under the king's authority, against the preferences of the former governor.
Strategic Positioning
This left Mowaa in a delicate position: asserting a clear stance on repatriation while remaining diplomatic on guardianship β and stressing its broader vision, which led to|c
